“Music is Life. That's why our hearts have beats."
Cecily Morgan
“Music is the language of the spirit. It opens the secret of life bringing peace, abolishing strife.”
Kahlil Gibran
What does Music look like at St Bernadette's?
At St Bernadette’s, the intention is that children gain a firm understanding of what music is through listening, singing, playing, evaluating, analysing, and composing across a wide variety of historical periods, styles, traditions, and musical genres.
Our objective is to develop a curiosity for the subject, as well as an understanding and acceptance of the validity and importance of all types of music.
We are committed to ensuring children understand the value and importance of music in the wider community, and are able to use their musical skills, knowledge, and experiences to involve themselves in music, in a variety of different contexts. We want music to inspire self-confidence in our children through development of a fun and safe learning environment, and encourage a feeling of fellowship through shared creation and appreciation of music.
Our music curriculum ensures students sing, listen, play, perform and evaluate. This is embedded in the classroom activities as well as the weekly singing assemblies, various concerts and performances (both in and out of school), and the option to learn instruments. Every child is given the opportunity to perform to each other in class and also to members of the wider community and their families through our annual Music Evening.
The elements of music are taught in the classroom lessons so that children are able to use some of the language of music to dissect it, and understand how it is made, played, appreciated and analysed. In the classroom students learn about the sounds that instruments make, from all main instrument groups. In doing so, they become familiar with the method of creating notes, as well as how to read basic music notation. They also learn how to compose, which in turn feeds their understanding when listening, playing, or analysing music. Composing or performing using vocal sounds is also part of the curriculum, which develops the understanding of musical elements without the added complexity of an instrument.

BMS Showcase and Talk
We showcased our musical talents this evening with a talk from Blackpool Music Service (BMS) about the musical instrument tuition available within school. We had performances from tenor horns, violins, cornets and guitars. All the pupils were amazing and you can see how much they are all improving. There was then the chance to try some of the instruments too. If you are interested in learning an instrument, please let your teacher know.

St Bernadette's Choir 2022
Formed in February of 2022, our new choir has already performed in the local area. They represented our school at the Lenten Service on Tuesday 29th March. This year it took place at St John Vianney's Church. Our part within the service represented Peter's denial and the members of the choir sang 'If we're honest' by Francesca Battistelli. They sang beautifully and we were very proud.
They have also performed at St Bernadette's Parish Church's Lenten Lunch to great review.
