What does Geography look like at St Bernadette’s?

 

Geography is an investigative subject, which develops an understanding of concepts, knowledge and skills. It explores the relationship between the Earth and its people and is also a key subject which can enable us to develop the ‘cultural capital’ of the children in our school.

At St Bernadette’s, we aim to inspire children to become curious and inquisitive explorers of their local community, environment and wider world. We aim to build upon their unique prior knowledge and experience to ensure they develop a good knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. Geography offers the opportunity to explore, research, exchange ideas and appreciate the world in which we live and begin to understand the wonders within it and how it has evolved.

How to support your child with Geography

It may seem daunting to understand each area of the curriculum but there are so many quick and easy things you can do to support your child. Everyday life constantly provides rich geographical experiences, information and understanding. Thinking and modelling geographical thinking is something you often do naturally without even realising it; for example: navigating your way home, to the shop or to school, listening to and making sense of local and world news, how you respond to the weather forecast as well as more exciting elements like researching and deciding where to go on holiday and how to get there. Below are some ideas of activities you can do to support your child:

 

• While you are out and about in your local area, talk about local physical features, attractions and activities.
• While travelling, you could share the road map or map phone app with your child so they can follow the route while you talk about where you are going. You could encourage your child to draw a map of their journey to somewhere familiar, including any natural or man-made features along the way.
• While you are away on holiday or visiting family or friends, discuss their current location and how it compares to home; discuss any similarities and differences.
• Visits to a museum or a trip to a tourist attraction can inspire and support children’s geographical thinking.
• Using what is around you can also inspire your child- magazines, TV, films and even some computer games can provide your child with a view of distant places. They enable your child to be transported instantly to another place. Prompt their thinking with questions, such as: What might the weather be like in this place? Why might the road have been built where it is? The list of questions is endless and will lead to all sorts of discussions which will really help to develop curiosity about, and understanding of, the world.
